The largest system North of 60 in Canada, this 104kW direct utility tied solar electric system is offsetting summer diesel use in the community of Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories. The system was completed in two stages, a 60.6kW system in January 2012 followed by a 43.4kW expansion in February 2013.
The project presented several challenges including an ice bridge/ferry route that was impassable for much of the project, low light conditions, and temperatures as low as -35 degrees Celsius in January. The system was completed well ahead of schedule and is now offsetting generator use within the town of Fort Simpson. See the video below for a glimpse at Canada’s largest solar PV system North of 60°.
